Icon maintains its links with the European Open Golf Championship
Event branding specialist Icon was awarded the contract to provide all course, advertising and wayfinding signage for the 2008 European Open Golf Championship. The event, one of the highlights of the international golfing calendar, took place at its new home - the London Golf Club, Ash, Kent - from July 3-8, 2008.
Commenting on the contract, Andrew Hodson, sales and marketing director for Icon, said; “We have had a long relationship with the European Tour and this event in particular, but the move to this new course provided us with different challenges in terms of signage design and implementation. We worked with the Tour to develop some exciting concepts to firmly establish the newly-designed event image, whilst ensuring that essential information was clearly communicated to the thousands of spectators that attended the event.”
Icon has a strong association with the European Open, having worked on the event since 1983, when, sponsored by Panasonic, it alternated between Sunningdale and Walton Heath. Since that time the championship has moved to the East Sussex National, and then to Dublin's K Club, under the sponsorship of General Accident and the Smurfit Kappa Group respectively. The event is one of a number of projects fulfilled by Icon on behalf of the European Tour, alongside the Irish Open, BMW Championship, Quinn Direct British Masters and the Ryder Cup in 1997 and 2006.
Situated close to Brands Hatch in North Kent and boasting two outstanding courses in The Heritage and The International, The London Golf Club first hosted the European Seniors Tour in 1995 when South African John Bland won the inaugural London Masters. The 2008 European Open took place on the Heritage Course.
